Consider a MOSFET-with its drain terminal connected to supply (VDD), source & substrate to ground, and a variable voltage to its gate terminal. When the voltage on gate is less than threshold voltage (Vth) of MOSFET, the channel is not fully formed. However, due to a potential difference between drain and source, some amount of current flows through the channel, called as sub-threshold current.
